Why did you become a mental health professional?

As a 45-year-old CBT therapist who's spent significant time in the school system, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact that early intervention and prevention can have on a person's mental well-being. Seeing young minds grappling with various challenges, I realized the critical importance of providing support and guidance at the earliest stages of development. However, my journey towards becoming a mental health professional isn't solely rooted in professional observations. Like many, I've faced my own share of struggles and hardships throughout life. From personal battles with anxiety and self-doubt to overcoming obstacles and adversities, I understand the profound impact these experiences can have on one's mental health and overall quality of life.

It's this amalgamation of personal and professional experiences that fuels my passion for mental health advocacy and therapy. I've walked through the darkness and emerged stronger on the other side, and I am deeply committed to guiding others on their own paths toward resilience and victory. For me, becoming a mental health professional isn't just a career choice—it's a calling born out of empathy, understanding, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in people's lives. I see each individual I work with not just as a client, but as a partner in their journey towards healing and triumph. My aim is to empower others to confront their challenges, rewrite their narratives, and emerge as victors in their own stories.

Favorite organization/non-profit?

I find the Loveland Foundation particularly commendable due to its proactive approach to addressing the prevalent stigma surrounding mental health within the Black community. This organization plays a crucial role in facilitating access to mental health resources for individuals who recognize the importance of seeking support but may encounter barriers due to cultural or societal misconceptions. By providing equitable access to mental health services, the Loveland Foundation empowers individuals to prioritize their mental well-being and pursue assistance

How do you recharge?

To unwind and recharge, I love snuggling up with my 10-year-old for hugs or diving into a captivating book. It's these simple moments of connection and relaxation that fuel my spirit and rejuvenate me.

Do you have any pets?

Let me tell you about a memorable moment with my furry family members: my 15-pound dachshund and my 95-pound standard poodle. The dynamics between them are quite interesting. You see, the dachshund, despite his small size, rules the roost with his immense love for everyone in the household.

One day, I decided to take them to a puppy play date. All was going well until a giant of a Great Dane leaned down and barked playfully at my poodle. Surprisingly, my poodle enjoyed the attention. However, my dachshund, with a fierce loyalty to his brother, came charging across the room, barking and making a fuss as if to say, "The only one who can bark at my brother is me!"

It was a hilarious and heartwarming moment that perfectly encapsulated the unique bond between my furry companions. Despite their differences in size and temperament, they are fiercely protective and deeply devoted to each other. It's moments like these that remind me of the joy and laughter our pets bring into our lives.
