My Therapy Style

Are you feeling stuck and yearning for change? Would you like to go on a journey of self-discovery, explore your full potential, and discover the possibility of radical change? Hi, My name is Juan Carlos Fernández and I am a Licensed Clinical Social worker. I have been in practice since 2017, helping people resolve issues related to depression, anxiety, phobias, identity issues, substance dependence, geriatric issues, grief and loss, stress, self-esteem, and family conflict issues.

I use an unconditional positive regard therapeutic approach when working with clients as every experience is unique and subjective. I incorporate Therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Techniques, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Techniques, and Psychodynamic Techniques, and I always use a Strengths-based model. Together, we will design a plan uniquely tailored for you. We will embark on a journey to foster empowerment, self-esteem, confidence, and a life-affirming approach.

Get to Know Me

Why did you become a mental health professional?

In my 20s, I struggled with mental health challenges. Coming out to my family was extremely stressful, as a Mexican Queer Male. I experienced depression and anxiety as a result and did not know who to turn to for help. Later in life, I wanted to be a vehicle of positive change for disenfranchised people and help them resolve cultural identity issues and become a better version of themselves.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of my professional job, I practice Bikram Yoga 4 days a week. I am passionate about gardening and have a collection of over 50 house plants and a food garden. In addition, I backpack and hike with friends as I love to be outdoors and move my body. I also very much enjoy spending time cooking for friends and socializing with them several times a week.

What is one thing you do daily that supports your well-being?

I am very spiritual and meditate daily. I feel it helps me center my intentions for the day grounds me in my purpose for the day.

What book have you read more than once?

Carlos Castañedas The Fire from Within. I really enjoy his books in general. I love his writing and perspectives on life and purpose. His books help me reflect on my own views while opening possibilities of change within myself. Castañedas' books also ground me and connect me to my heritage and Mexican culture. He poses a great responsibility to change within our self to be a better self.

How do you recharge?

Sleep well, exercise, eat well, socialize with friends, and meditate daily.
