Understanding the cost of couples therapy

Want to know the cost of couple’s therapy? Couple’s therapy costs more than individual therapy for a number of reasons. The licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) is a specialist – therapists who primarily see individuals may not have the experience and skills to take on this role. It should be noted that LMFTs are the most commonly seen for couples therapy, though they aren’t the only ones who are qualified for couples therapy. In addition, since these therapists are seeing more than one person, the workload is greater. Couple’s therapists determine their own rates, depending on factors ranging from where they live to their level of specialization. They might charge more for the initial session if they feel they need extra time to learn the full context of the couple. If your insurance pays for couple’s therapy, it can relieve some of the financial responsibility. Insurance companies generally pay between 60% to 90% of the amount. With Octave, the average copayment for a therapy session is $32.

On average, couple’s therapy costs up to $300 per hour in the most expensive states. At Octave, couple’s therapy costs $32 on average, with insurance. Not all therapists take insurance, even for individual therapy. The hours required to do insurance admin can be prohibitive for therapists working privately. Furthermore, the reimbursement rates offered by insurance are not always adequate for therapists in private practice who need to cover their own overheads, marketing, and any staff they employ. The good news is that all therapists at Octave take insurance. Octave takes care of the legwork, ensuring their hours of work are dedicated to the therapy process.

Why do different therapists charge varying rates for couple’s therapy? This is due to a number of factors. Geographic Location: In areas where the cost-of-living is higher, such as metro areas, couple’s therapy costs more. This is due both to the therapist’s required income and the higher demand for therapy in these locations. Type of Therapist: Any licensed therapist can provide couple’s therapy. However, licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) have the particular qualifications and expertise to do so effectively. Therefore, an LMFT will generally charge more than a licensed professional counselor (LPC) Session Duration : A session in couple’s therapy may last longer than an hour, depending on the therapist’s recommendations according to the needs of the couple. Initial sessions and sessions for couples in major crisis are most likely to last longer than an hour. Therapists charge, on average, $50 to $100 more per additional hour Length and frequency: Different couples require different levels of intervention, leading to the therapy process spanning unique lengths of time. Some therapists and couples may prefer less frequent sessions which can give the couple more of an opportunity to work on what they are learning between sessions. The complexity of issues being addressed: (which type of couples therapy, might impact how often etc etc): In relationships with particularly complex dynamics, sessions may last longer and be more frequent. The couple may need to commit to a longer-term process as part of their recovery, leading to higher costs as the sessions add up.

It depends on what your insurance plan you have. Insurance can reimburse you for a percentage of the fee for couples therapy – approximately 60% to 90%. You can use our handy cost estimate calculator to get an estimate of how much couples therapy will cost in your location with your particular insurance provider. Methods
Common approaches to couples therapy

The Gottman Method focuses on building positive emotions in a relationship, to replace negative emotions such as defensiveness and contempt. This approach builds the couple’s skills in maintaining fondness and admiration for each other, turning toward each other to get needs met, and managing conflict.

One of the most well-established approaches for couples therapy, EFT focuses on relationships that may be plagued by trust issues, insecurity, or abandonment. It can help people learn how to interact with their partners in more loving, responsive, and emotionally connected ways, which can result in a more secure attachment.

IBCT focuses on emotional acceptance as the basis for concrete change. It assumes that relationship problems result not just from certain actions and inactions of partners but also in their emotional reactivity to those behaviors. This approach works to build empathy and understanding between partners.

The therapist that we were matched with was perfect and was engaged with our issues and provided advice and resources for us. We "graduated" couples therapy and our relationship has greatly improved. We learned how to communicate and have patience with each other. Our therapist was supportive of both perspectives on issues that we had in the relationship, and gave us the tools we needed to work through them.

FAQs about couples and relationship therapy

Couples therapy, also known as marriage or relationship therapy, is a type of therapy that focuses on helping a couple improve relationship dynamics and resolve conflict. Couples therapists facilitate open and constructive dialogue with the goal of helping to identify and address underlying issues, and teach strategies to create a stronger and more satisfying relationship.

When you complete your intake questionnaire, let us know that you’re interested in couples therapy. A Care Navigator may follow up to better understand your needs and goals before placing you into couples therapy, or your couples therapist will discuss recommendations and next steps after an initial appointment.

We are in-network with most Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, Health Net, and UMR plans. At this time, if you are insured through Medicare, Medicaid, Medi-Cal, or Tricare we are not able to provide services to these beneficiaries due to associated regulatory requirements. To learn more about insurance at Octave, please visit our insurance page.

Our mission is to make high-quality couples therapy accessible by working with insurance companies to cover mental health services in-network. Over 95% of our clients pay an average of $28 per session through insurance.

Octave takes the time to learn about you and your relationship’s unique concerns. Upon signing up under the primary insurance holder’s name, couples will complete a short questionnaire to indicate their specific needs and preferences. After completion, couples may have the opportunity to self-select a provider, while others may opt to be matched to a provider by our Care Navigation Team. Couples may also be asked to schedule a consultation with a Care Navigator if we require more information in order to match.

Our Care Navigation Team will thoroughly review your onboarding questionnaire to learn about your unique needs and preferences. Using specialized knowledge on Octave’s providers, your Care Navigator will match you and your partner with the best possible fit.

In couples therapy you can expect the therapist to facilitate an open and honest conversation around the issues affecting your relationship. The therapist will help you identify and understand patterns of behavior, improve communication, and improve conflict resolution. Each session will be tailored to your specific needs and goals as a couple.

We have many therapists who specialize in couples therapy. These therapists are highly skilled in facilitating difficult conversations, identifying underlying relationship issues, and teaching strategies to improve relationships.

There are several signs that may indicate that progress is being made in couples therapy. Here are some indicators:

1) Improved communication: The couple is able to communicate more effectively. They are able to listen to each other without judgment, and express their own feelings openly.

2) Increased connection: There is an increase in positive feelings towards one another. This may include more affection, trust, respect and empathy.

3) Increase conflict resolution: The couple is able resolve issues in a manner that is both constructive and respectful.

3) Decreased unwanted behavior: There is a decrease in behaviors that have historically negatively impacted the relationship (e.g., name calling, cheating, substance use).

Couples therapy is not limited to married couples. It can be beneficial for couples at any stage in their relationship: dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership.

The duration of therapy varies depending on the issues being addressed, the goals set, and the progress made. Many couples see improvement even after just one month, while others might need longer . It’s important to regularly evaluate progress with your therapist and adjust the frequency and duration of sessions as needed. Ultimately, therapy lasts as long as it takes to achieve the desired changes, which is different for each family.

Yes. Here at Octave, we believe client’s don’t need ongoing therapy. We focus on helping couples meet their goals and once they are met, couples can end care and return only when they need support again. The decision to end care or take a break is best determined by discussing this with your therapist.

Couples therapists can address a wide range of issues that impact relationships. Some of the common issues include, but are not limited to, issues related to communication, trust, intimacy, feelings of disconnection, life transitions, recurring conflict, and other external factors.

Yes, Octave clients can engage in both individual and relationship therapy at the same time. If you are interested in adding on an additional service, you can discuss this with your provider directly, and your provider will be able to initiate the process.

If you prefer, you may also request to add an additional service by emailing the Support Team ([email protected]) and/or your assigned Care Navigator.
