Why see a therapist in person

Sometimes, you just need to talk face-to-face

Sometimes, it's just not possible to have a private space for virtual therapy sessions. Whether it's getting away from roommates or family, a therapist's physical office can offer complete confidentiality and privacy for your therapy sessions.

With online therapy, it may be difficult for a therapist to read those non-verbal cues that your body communicates during a therapy session, and these might be important to helping your therapist understand how you're processing or working through things during a session.

Some people may prefer seeing their therapist in person because they feel a closer connection to their therapist by being close to them. This may be because with online therapy, it's sometimes more difficult to establish clear eye contact when talking with your therapist given how a device's camera is positioned relative to the screen.

Our success is measured by the satisfaction of the clients we serve. See what some of them have to say about their experience.
I’ve had such an impossibly hard time - for the past 8 years - finding a therapist both in my network and who I bond with. When I signed up for Octave they provided me with an amazing in-network therapist within a day. This is truly life changing!

My therapist is great and it’s super affordable. I wouldn't be able to get this level of care without Octave.

I genuinely recommend Octave, My therapist has helped me so much these past months and I am forever grateful for all the tools I’ve learned through my sessions.

The matching service is one of the best things you offer. Great that you take insurance. Both therapists I have worked with through Octave have been wonderful.
Octave Patient
I felt I was matched with a therapist who is a really good fit. I also feel like it was easy to apply and get matched, and there haven't been any issues with payment or insurance (which tends to be the biggest headache with therapy).

Have questions? Start here.

During your first session, your therapist will take most of the session to conduct what is called an “intake assessment” which is just asking a series of questions to have a full understanding the concerns you want to address and how they impact you, your history of emotional concerns and how different aspects of your life (like work, social, family, health) are going. Next, your therapist will collaboratively create a “treatment plan” with you which will serve as a therapy road map for the following sessions for what to focus on to achieve your specific goals.

What happens after that is where everyone’s experience can be different. Some people feel immediate relief from creating a plan and starting to address their concerns. For others, it can feel a bit challenging to talk about their struggles- an analogy to think of here is that you have to disinfect a wound for it to heal properly, and sometimes the disinfecting part stings before it feels better.

With your treatment plan and therapy goals set, you’ll have a guide to know when you are feeling better and when you have succeeded in making the improvements you desired when you started the therapy process.

Generally it takes up to 3 days to find a therapist match, though we're often able to offer a match within the first hour.

Changing therapists during the course of therapy is common. Your Octave therapist will be able to start that process for you. If you wish to switch to a new provider, let your current therapist know directly. Once the process has been initiated, you can expect to be contacted by a member of the Care Navigation Team within 1-4 business days. From there, your Care Navigator will assist in rematching you with a new provider.

If you prefer, you may also request a rematch by emailing the Support Team ([email protected]) and/or your assigned Care Navigator.

Yes, Octave does offer limited slots on evenings and during weekends. Please let us know in your intake form if you've prefer a weekend or evening appointment and we'll do our best to accommodate!

No, in-person therapy is not necessarily "more effective" than online therapy. Both methods are equally effective for many common mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. The best format depends on the individual's needs, the specific condition, and available resources.
